The Ethical Tightrope of the Smart City

Focus: Privacy, Surveillance, and Urban Infrastructure

Imagine a city that breathes with you. Using the Internet of Things (IoT), modern urban centers are becoming “Smart Cities” where traffic lights adjust in real-time to prevent jams and waste bins signal when they need emptying. This 4IR integration promises a future of hyper-efficiency and reduced carbon footprints, making urban life more sustainable than ever.

But this convenience comes at a cost: data privacy. For a city to be “smart,” it must constantly watch, listen, and record. The challenge of the coming decade is establishing a digital social contract that protects individual anonymity while leveraging collective data for the public good. We must ensure our smart cities don’t turn into “surveillance cities.”
